DESCRIBE YOUR APPROACH TO TEACHING
I have an organic, individually tailored approach, encouraging students to experiment with new techniques in a supportive learning environment. I get a lot of pleasure from helping people to gain abilities which they can then continue to develop alone or through further tuition.
WHAT WILL STUDENTS GAIN IF THEY COME ON ONE OF YOUR COURSES?
Hands-on experiance and new skills.
WHAT INSPIRES YOUR OWN WORK?
My work as a metals conservator brings me into contact with fascinating historic objects, providing a wealth of inspiration for my jewellery and sculptural work. Natural forms and growth patterns inform almost everything I make.
WHERE CAN STUDENTS SEE EXAMPLES OF YOUR WORK?
On my website www.silverbyscarlett.co.uk and Facebook page. Recently I have been concentrating on making individual commissions rather then selling through galleries and exhibitions.
WHERE DID YOU GAIN YOUR TRAINING/EXPERIENCE?
I began work with metal at the age of six. I set up my own workshop in my teens and began selling work through galleries, craft fairs and commissions. I studied welding at Canterbury College, Art and Design (National Diploma) at Kent Institute of Art and Design and Metalwork and Jewellery (Dip.HE) at the University for the Creative Arts at Farnham. I am currently studying for an MA in Conservation Studies (specialising in metalwork conservation) at West Dean College.
WHAT TEACHING EXPERIENCE HAVE YOU HAD?
One-to-one jewellery making tuition and introducing undergraduate students to conservation as a visiting lecturer.
HAVE YOU WRITTEN ANY BOOKS/HAD ARTICLES PUBLISHED?
I am a regular contributor to the West Dean Conservation blog
DO YOU BELONG TO ANY PROFFESSIONAL GROUPS/SOCIETIES?
ICON (the Institute of Conservation)
