DESCRIBE YOUR APPROACH TO TEACHING

My aim is to encourage good practice, sketching and working with a range of materials. A confident chef understands the basics of cookery in order to invent new recipes and an artist needs to have familiarity with a range of basic skills and materials in order to be free to paint with originality and style.
I underpin all my courses with a mix of traditional and innovative drawing and sketching techniques, with sound theory and rules to break.

WHAT WILL STUDENTS GAIN IF THEY COME ON ONE OF YOUR COURSES?

I work with Students to broaden their understanding of the application and potential of a range of mainly water based media. I do this to build their confidence and to enable personal development and creativity.

ARE THERE ANY PARTICULAR TECHNIQUES/PROCESSES YOU USE IN YOUR TEACHING?

I teach many techniques and their appropriate application. I occasionally demonstrate painting methods, but mostly encourage practice and practical work.

WHAT INSPIRES YOUR OWN WORK?

My own work is eclectic. With quite separate strands. I favour working directly from subject particularly outside, a spontaneous reaction to the elements and landscape before me. I also have studio based work that requires a number of prerequisites, experimenting with media to create effects and a narrative composition that is an appropriate vehicle for the method. I also make sure I am fully cognisant with any technique that I am teaching so I will explore the full potential for a period before I attempt to teach. This leads me in different directions with my own work, so it is forever changing.
