Frances Hatch

I believe that creative work is an important way of expressing our relationship with the world in which we live and with each other. I construct carefully crafted courses designed to relax, inspire and challenge. My teaching springs out of my practice and is therefore continually evolving and informed by my own discoveries.
What will students gain if they come on one of your courses?I engage with each student as a unique ‘voice’ as well as maintain the integrity of the group. Students will find the course technically informative and will have individual support to discern what is appropriate for each participant.
Are there any particular techniques/processes you use in your teaching? The West Dean grounds and environs with its seasonal variation very often serve as inspiration for my courses. I employ a variety of means to encourage students to relax and focus. Alongside the apparent freedom in my approach to image making is situated discipline and acquisition of skills. Often students are invited to work at dawn or dusk. As a result of mindful selection of pigments and tools, water-based media can be handled freely and ‘juicily’.
What inspires your own work?Remarkable moments lived that prompt me to respond.
Where can students see examples of your work?Where did you gain your training? Experience?
