Summer School in Visual Art and Craft
July - August 2014 Summer School

WEST DEAN’S SUMMER SCHOOL – a creative and social highlight of the year. Gain inspiration from Edward James’s legacy – the house, gardens, arboretum and estate. At the height of the Summer West Dean offers the perfect location to immerse yourself in creativity and relax with tutors and other students, exchanging ideas, insights and experiences. Explore a diverse range of creative approaches on your chosen course, and make the most of our programmed swap-over session in another art or craft, to gain inspiring new ways of approaching your subject. This year there are seven tutors new to our Summer School programme and 10 new courses, alongside popular repeats, to choose from. An inspiring place, inspiring tutors and students for an inspiring time.

Special Features of the Summer School:

  • Short illustrated talks by tutors on their work – open to all.
  • A programmed swap-over session to another course of your choice.
  • Displays of tutors’ work.
  • An afternoon of organised visits to local art venues.
  • An optional evening at the Chichester Festival Theatre (which must be prebooked).
  • A special party with dinner, entertainment and music.
  • Workshop displays of students’ work and informal end-of-course group reviews.

“I gained more than I think I could ever say from being on the course with Cas Holmes. I hope to be delivering a session for an alternative schooling programme for young people excluded from mainstream education, in which some of these newly learned textile techniques and 'ways into drawing' may be used. I felt so welcome and send grateful thanks to you, Cas Holmes, Alison Baxter and your Summer School team.” Julie Ford, Tracing shadows and mark making in textiles SUMMER SCHOOL COURSES.

The page numbers against each course refer you to the description of each individual course, listed by subject, throughout the brochure.
The Summer School courses begin with lunch on Saturday and end at 3pm the following Friday.
Full details are either sent on receipt of postal bookings or can be downloaded from our website. Tuition, lunch and dinner are covered in the non-residential course fee.
