Books, Paper and Lettering

The courses in this section cover a wide variety of materials and techniques and offer students the opportunity to gain satisfaction from learning traditional skills within a contemporary context.

Paper week February 12-17

New for 2012 we are introducing a week of courses themed around one material. This year the material is PAPER and there are six courses programmed exploring this versatile material in two- and three- dimensions and various scales. The week will include a short cross-over session when you can work with a different tutor, a short illustrated talk by tutors on their work and an optional visit to Khadi Papers, a local supplier of handmade paper. 10% discount for teachers (Telephone bookings only) Tel: +44 (0) 1243 811301.

Books, Paper and Lettering

Techniques include: Paper marbling/hand marbling on paper, Book arts, Bookbinding, Book repair, Paper engineering and pop-up books, Paper clay, Calligraphy, Italic calligraphy and a range of other calligraphic hands, Lettering, Letter cutting and Letter carving.

Workshops and equipment

Lettercutting, papermaking, paper marbling and some bookbinding courses are based in the Main Workshop on the ground floor, or in adjacent workshops. Other bookbinding courses and all calligraphy courses take place in Art Studios 1 or 2, both reached by stairs or a stair-lift. Specialist equipment, tools and materials are available at the College for all these crafts.
