Message from the Principal
Students who wish to explore creativity, technology, the history of decorative arts or material science, in order to engage in practical work within a professional context, should give very careful consideration to West Dean.
Gaining the skills and knowledge needed for a successful career as a creative practitioner is becoming increasingly difficult. Investment and resources needed to provide an effective learning environment are becoming scarce. West Dean College, with its dedicated studio-workshops and very low student to staff ratio, is a centre of excellence for students and tutors who aspire towards achieving a particular career ambition in the creative arts.
The University of Sussex validates West Dean’s diplomas and degrees and continues to help develop new research
projects alongside our superb residency and fellowship programme. Many of our graduates are highly sought
after and this is set to continue as investment in education and fundraising grows at West Dean.
A coincidence has emerged this year with 2010 being: the College’s 40th anniversary: the 30th anniversary of the Chilingirian String Quartet’s Summer School: the 20th anniversary of the Classical Guitar Festival: my 10th anniversary as Principal. Tradition has always played an important role at West Dean as a bedrock for new ideas.
A visit to the College and a meeting with a tutor may be arranged at relatively short notice. Most visitors, having experienced the atmosphere at West Dean and the location, make it a priority to return.

Principal
