Scholarships and Bursaries

The information set out below is for your guidance. It applies to the academic year 2009-2010.

Funding is discussed with applicants at the interview stage. Students who do not have access to the necessary funds will have the opportunity to apply for financial assistance from the sources of funding listed below. These should be investigated as early as possible so that letters of application can be sent immediately on receipt of the Principal’s letter offering a place on the programme.

While at West Dean College students have two main costs to meet:

  • Tuition fees: £3,485 per term
  • Living costs: accommodation and food (including weekends and holiday breaks), travel, work placement (applies to some programmes), toiletries, laundry, postage, telephone, leisure activities, some materials and specialist tools depending on your subject area.

WHO TO APPLY TO

1. For the following awards:
Edward James Foundation bursaries, BADA Joan Eyles scholarship, South Square Trust scholarship, Sidney Sanders Charitable Trust scholarships, Barrow bursary, NADFAS bursaries and the St. Roche scholarship,
Apply to: THE PRINCIPAL’S OFFICE, WEST DEAN COLLEGE Applicants should request a bursary/scholarship form from the College, complete it and return it to the Principal’s Office with a covering letter. Competition for these are high, so do explore other funding streams.

2. PRIVATE GRANT-MAKING TRUSTS
A list of these is to be found in the directories mentioned below. They can be consulted in the reference sections of public libraries and information is also available on the internet.

When applying to private grant-making trusts, do ensure that you are selective and consider your application seriously. Most grant-makers have very strict policies about whom they will and will not support.. Take time to find out their guidelines and apply to relevant trusts only, otherwise you will be wasting your time (and theirs). You should check:

  • Whether the programme is eligible. Trusts normally specify the causes they support, e.g. education, medical research.
  • Whether you are eligible: nationality, age.
  • Whether the trust accepts applications from organisations or individuals. If they only accept applications from organisations, we shall be pleased to submit one on your behalf.
If in doubt, it is worth phoning the trust to ask for further details. It is always worthwhile double-checking the information you find in the directories as things can be subject to change.
