Painting and Drawing and Sculpture
The Painting and Drawing and Sculpture pathways of the Visual Arts programme are housed within a purpose-built and dedicated workshop and studio space equipped for your specialisation. IT facilities are available within the studio, including a scanner, digital camera, image manipulation software and Internet access. Additional computers are sited within the College Library and IT suite. In addition to your own personal studio space, you also have access to a number of specialised studios including a photographic studio, sculpture coutyard for larger scale work, pottery, forge and a printmaking studio.
Tapestry and Textile ArtThe Tapestry and Textile Art programme is delivered in the purpose-built and dedicated tapestry and textile studio which has excellent natural light. There are also specialist facilities including a seperate area for dyeing. IT facilities are available within the studio, including a scanner, digital camera, image manipulation software and Internet access. Additional computers are sited within the College Library and IT suite.
Conservation of Books and Library MaterialsStudents on the Book and Library Materials programme have their personal workbench situated in the Bindery. In addition the department has areas for paper conservation, washing, science, finishing, sharpening and secure storage; and there is a range of conservation and bookbinding equipment. Basic tools are provided at the beginning of the course, but students are encouraged and given advice towards building up their personal set of tools. A separate laboratory is available as a College-wide resource, containing analytical and microscopy equipment. Direct and wireless internet access is available in the department, and there is a computer suite in the College.
Conservation of Ceramics and Related MaterialsThe programme is delivered in the purpose-built ceramics conservation workshop which benefits from excellent natural and artificial light where you will have your own workbench and storage for personal tools and equipment. There are specialist areas in the workshop for cleaning, retouching and finishing.
Conservation of ClocksSome basic hand tools are provided although it is expected that students will build their own collection. We have machine tools including centre lathes by Myford and Schaublin, drilling machines, a brazing hearth and other specialist equipment.
Conservation of Furniture and Related ObjectsThe programme is delivered in a purpose-built, furniture conservation workshop, which benefits from excellent natural and artificial light. You will have your own workbench, and storage for personal tools and equipment. Specialist facilities include a finishing room with fume extraction, stores for timber, materials and furniture. There is an analytical laboratory directly adjacent to the workshop.
Conservation of MetalworkThe programme is delivered in the metalwork conservation workshop where you will have your own bench with storage space for your tools and equipment. There are also dedicated areas for soldering, brazing, casting and welding, a tool room, a departmental laboratory and a machine shop with a lathe, bansaw, pillar drill, grinder and polisher. The programme also makes use of the on-site silversmithing wokshop and blacksmiths forge.
Making Historic Furniture PracticesThe programme is delivered in a purpose-built, furniture workshop, which benefits from excellent natural and artificial light. You will have your own workbench, and storage for personal tools and equipment. Specialist facilities include a finishing room with fume extraction, stores for timber, materials and furniture. There is an analytical laboratory directly adjacent to the workshop.
Making Stringed Musical InstrumentsMusical Instruments have a fully equipped workshop, machine shop and separate varnishing room. Students acquire hand tools during the programme, but many large items such as cramps and specialist instrument making tools are part of the equipment in the workshop. Students are allocated a bench and cupboard space for the duration of their time here.
