Professional Development Diploma:
Conservation of Buildings Interiors and Sites (PDD Building Cons.)
Part-time course

This diploma is awarded in recognition of the successful completion of 10 Building Conservation Masterclasses (BCMs) and the submission of a final 3,000 word essay.

This essay consists of a statement that demonstrates the link between the candidate’s overall experience gained from the BCMs and past, current or intended professional practice as a conservator of buildings, interiors and sites.

To be eligible for the award of the Professional Development Diploma (PDD) and prior to the submission of their final essay, you must undertake full attendance and demonstrate satisfactory performance in a total of 10 BCMs, seven of which are compulsory and a further three which can be selected from any of those remaining (see below). The 10 BCMs can be taken in any order but must normally have been completed within a maximum period of five years prior to the submission of the final essay.

The seven compulsory Building Conservation Masterclasses are:

  • The Structural Repair of Historic Buildings
  • Conservation and Repair of Stone Masonry
  • Conservation and Repair of Timber
  • Conservation and Repair of Brick, Terracotta and Flint Masonry
  • Conservation and Repair of Plasters and Renders
  • Mortars for Repair and Conservation
  • The Historic Interior: Commissioning and Managing Conservation Research

A further three Building Conservation Masterclasses are selected from:

  • Conservation of Stone Surfaces and Detail
  • Conservation and Repair of Architectural Metalwork
  • Specifying Conservation Works
  • Conservation and Repair of Masonry Ruins
  • Managing Wildlife on Historic Monuments
  • Cleaning Masonry Buildings
  • Conservation of Concrete
  • Care and Conservation of Historic Floors (PCIP 2010 programme)

Detailed specifications relating to the presentation of this written work may be obtained from the PDD administrator. Following the assessment and approval of the final essay, a recommendation will be presented to the College Assessment Board that the PDD in the Conservation of Buildings Interiors and Sites is awarded to the candidate. Holders of the Diploma may use the title PDD (Building Cons.)

Fully inclusive residential fee from £564
(Except The Historic Interior course from £379)
